From October 15 to 17, 2021, the sixth international seminar on language testing and evaluation was held in Shanghai University. The conference was hosted by the Professional Committee of Language Testing and Evaluation of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese and Shanghai University, organized by the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University, and co sponsored by the editorial department of Foreign Language Testing and Teaching. The theme of the conference was "the integration of language assessment and teaching". Nie Qing, Vice President of Shanghai University, delivered an opening speech. The opening ceremony was presided over by Shang Xin, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University. Sara T. Cushing, Chairman of the International Society for Language Testing, Liu Jianda, Chairman of the Language Testing and Evaluation Professional Committee of the China Association for the Comparison of English and Chinese, Vice President of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, He Lianzhen, Chairman of the University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, Vice President of Zhejiang University, Zeng Yongqiang, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPPCC Guangdong Provincial Committee, President of Guangdong Foreign Language Arts Teachers College, Vice Chairman of the Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of Higher Vocational Colleges of the Ministry of Education, Jin Yan, director of the National College English Test Band 4 and Band 6, vice chairman of the Special Committee for Language Testing and Evaluation of the China Association for the Comparison of English and Chinese, Wang Jimin, vice chairman of the Special Committee for Language Testing and Evaluation of the China Association for the Comparison of English and Chinese, and chief expert of major national social science projects, Deng Zhiyong, secretary of the Party committee of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University, Zhang Xinling, director of the Foreign Language Education Research Center of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University, attended the opening ceremony. Nearly 300 experts and scholars from universities, research institutions and educational examination institutions at home and abroad attended the meeting.
In his speech, Vice President Nie Qing pointed out that the purpose of this meeting is to strengthen the cooperation between the English and Chinese testing community, build a unified cooperation platform, provide services for researchers, examination institutions, and education policy makers in the field of language teaching and evaluation at home to exchange the latest developments and research results, and promote the exchange between the language testing community at home and abroad. President Nie affirmed the work of the Foreign Language Education Research Center of the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University. In recent years, the Center has been committed to the education and evaluation of English and Chinese as foreign languages, and has set an example among domestic universities. In 2018, with reference to authoritative international and domestic English examination standards, it formulated and implemented a graded college English teaching standard characterized by "integrating artificial intelligence, highlighting output orientation, and emphasizing skill integration".
In her online report, Professor Sara T. Cushing comprehensively and deeply discussed the formative assessment techniques used in language classroom. The content covers the reasons for adopting formative assessment technology, product oriented formative methods and technologies (corpus linguistics and automatic feedback), process oriented methods and technologies (eye tracking and keystroke recording) of formative assessment, and low technology strategies for formative assessment in the classroom.
In the keynote report, Professor Liu Jianda introduced the relevant policies of college English teaching reform in China, and put forward suggestions on what formative assessment should include and how to implement it in the classroom. Professor Jin Yan focused on the role of examination rules in large-scale examinations and classroom tests, and further analyzed the backwash effect of examination rules on test validity demonstration and improvement of examinations. Professor Wang Jimin of Beijing Language and Culture University and associate professor Zhao Ningning of Beijing Normal University explored the methods, paths and trends of monitoring the quality of Chinese learning under the "double minus" policy. Professor Huang Liyan of South China Normal University combed the research results of the cognitive validity of the English postreading continuation task of the China National College Entrance Examination, and revealed the cognitive processing mechanism of the candidates in the comprehensive writing test.
The meeting was held online and offline, with 5 keynote reports, 6 symposiums, 8 sub forums and 4 workshops organized. In the symposium, experts and scholars discussed the application of China English Proficiency Scale in English teaching from the perspective of teaching, shared the research on the connection between diagnostic assessment test and China English Proficiency Scale, and analyzed the development of teachers' evaluation ability in language teaching. In the group report, experts and scholars discussed and communicated about classroom language assessment, diagnostic language assessment, language standards and their applications, online language assessment, educational assessment reform and language assessment. In addition, the conference arranged four pre conference workshops on October 15. The topics include: formative assessment of young learners; Means and verification techniques in learning assessment; Structural equation model and its application in language testing; The examination interpretation and self-assessment design based on the China English Proficiency Scale.
At the closing ceremony, President Liu Jianda, on behalf of the Professional Committee of Language Testing and Evaluation of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese, thanked the sponsor of the conference, the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University, and said that the conference had a strong online and offline academic atmosphere, high participation and excellent results, which demonstrated the rich high-level academic achievements of the theme and reflected the achievements of language testing and evaluation in recent years. The successful holding of this seminar not only witnessed the research results of the construction of China's foreign language proficiency testing system, but also promoted the academic exchanges between the English and Chinese testing circles at home and abroad. On this basis, the School of Foreign Languages of Shanghai University will further promote the reform of foreign language education and teaching, promote the transformation of language assessment research results, and contribute to the formulation of national language education policies.
